Visa Process for International participants

All travellers to Australia must have a valid visa before boarding their plane. You cannot apply for a visa on arrival in Australia (with the exception of New Zealand and Norfolk Island passport holders).

The visa options for participants in ASSITEJ 2008 and the appropriate visa to apply for will depend on your country of passport. You will need to apply for either an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) or a short stay business visa.

Electronic Travel Authority

Travellers holding passports from the following countries may apply for an ETA which will let you spend up to three months in Australia.

Andorra

Iceland

Portugal

Austria

Ireland

* Taiwan passport holders can be processed for an ETA only if resident in and applying in Taiwan.

** UK (British National Overseas) passport holders can apply for an ETA only if resident in and applying in Hong Kong (SAR).

You are advised to apply for your ETA at least two weeks before your proposed date of travel. You can apply for an ETA (Visitor) either:

  • Online - http://www.eta.immi.gov.au
  • through a travel agent, airline or specialist service provider arranging an ETA on your behalf (often this is easiest as you can ask them to organise it when you buy your ticket)
  • applying at an Australian visa office outside Australia.

You are only eligible to apply for an ETA while you are outside Australia and hold one of the listed ETA-eligible passports. A service charge of A$20 applies.

 VISA

If you do not meet the criteria for an ETA, then you should visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website http://www.immi.gov.au  or contact your nearest Australian visa office for further information and application forms.

An appropriate visa to attend ASSITEJ 2008 is the Business (Short Stay) Visa (Subclass 456), see http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/business/456/index.htm

International visitors who wish to attend ASSITEJ 2008 are encouraged to apply six to eight weeks before departing for Australia.

When you apply for your visa, we recommend you email Tony Mack, ASSITEJ 2008 Director, International Relations, (email:international.relations@assitej2008.com.au), who will notify the International Event Co-ordinator Event Network (IECN). The IECN is part of the Department of Immigration which can assist delegates from non-ETA countries to get their visas for international events like ASSITEJ 2008.

Please note that applicants must meet all relevant requirements to be granted the appropriate visa.
