The Voyage

by Kijimuna Dance & Music Troupe

"All the people in this world walk their own road, their own way, at their own speed. Michi-nu-sura celebrates the happiness of living the same day, in the same moment together despite cultural differences"

The Voyage depicts the life of the Okinawan people, using the movements of Okinawan classical dance. All lyrics are written in the Okinawan dialect and the songs performed with Sanshin (an Okinawan stringed instrument), Chinese violin, flute, drum and handclap. Seven dancers and three musicians transform, scene by scene, into traditional characters – fishermen, farmers or even royalty.

The Voyage premiered at the Festival d’Avignon in France in 2006 and, apart from seasons in Japan, has also toured to the 2007 Danish Children’s Theatre Festival in Viborg, Denmark and the inaugural Asian Children’s Theatre Festival in Seoul, Korea.
